Most of the computer freezes happen because of software issues but sometimes there can be other reasons too. Following is a guide that will help you to Diagnose a Frozen Computer and Fix it once the problem has been identified.

Software Freezes

Most of the times, computers hang because of some fault in the software that you are running. In order to fix that you would need to terminate the process which is abusing your system’s memory.

Often times, you can recover your computer by rebooting it but if that doesn’t work there can be two reasons – either your computer has viruses or the unresponsive program is loaded at during start-up.

Steps to Fix this issue:-

Step 1: Press “ALT + F4” to close any program that might be open.

Step 2: Press “ALT + Tab” to switch between Windows, if nothing happens, open the Task Manager by pressing “Left CTRL + Shift + ESC.” This should bring up the task manager, if it doesn’t press “CTRL + ALT + DEL” then either use mouse to click “Start Task Manager” or press “Tab” till the time “Start Task Manager” is highlighted, after than press “Enter.”

Step 3: Proceed to “Processes” tab by using mouse or “Tab” and once you are in the processes tab, sort the items by clicking on “Memory.”

This would give you a list of processes that is heavily abusing your system’s RAM.

Step 4: Close all the programs that you think are using higher memory than usual.

Most often, doing this would bring your computer back to life.

Once you find out the name of the processes, make a note of them. If those processes are initiated by any software you use, you must check that software for viruses using a trustworthy, paid antivirus program.

If the antivirus doesn’t detect anything the software is lagging because your computer hardware is not able to run that software smoothly, in that case stop using that software and switch to a compatible one.

Tip: If the faulty processes execute during start-up remove them by checking off the process name from system configuration panel.

Once you have removed the troublesome programs from Startup, reboot your computer. If the computer is still lagging or freezing without any indication, the problem could be because of some faulty component. Get your computer diagnosed by a computer repair person who would make the necessary repair/component replacement.
