At the May 12th WestLicht Photographica auction in Vienna, Leica’s rare 0-Series camera was sold for a whopping $2.79 million which makes it the most expensive camera in the world; earlier this record was held by the same camera which was sold at this very auction, last year.
The reason why this camera bagged such a high price is that it is an ultra-rare piece; only 25 of these 0-series (or null series) cameras were produced; these were prototypes, launched to test the markets for Leica A which was released a couple of years later.
Bid for this fully working photographer’s desire started at about $386,000 but shot to €1 million within a minute.
