Samsung announced that they have formed 20,000-employee entity called Samsung Display Co. which would entirely focus on building and developing display panels for LCD televisions, computer monitors etc. Samsung is considered a real player in the LCD display business but even after acquiring 22.7 trillion won (about $20.1 billion) last year, in 2011, they took a loss of 750 billion won (about $665 million).
Samsung also announced that Display Co. would be merged with Samsung Mobile Display, the branch that manufactures OLED displays for Samsung’s tablets and Smartphones. As of now, Samsung owns 100% shares of Display Co. and 64.4% shares of Mobile Display (Samsung SDI owns the rest), therefore the merger can happen without any troubles. With the merger, Samsung would look to shift resources to its OLED manufacturing wing because the demand of Smartphones & tablets is bound to increase in future.
