
Samsung has been working on flexible, foldable displays for Smartphones & Tablets for quite some time now and they have proved that these sort of displays are not only possible to manufacture but would be making mainstream soon.
Samsung has finally named its displays “Youm” and have also registered several trademarks like WAMOLED, FAMOLED, PAMOLED, TAMOLED for it and other interesting displays it wishes to manufacture in future.
If everything goes right, these display might release by the end of 2012, or in the beginning of 2013. Youm displays would not only be foldable, but thinner, lighter and almost – unbreakable.
Samsung has achieved Youm display by removed several layers of glass and other solid materials from regular OLED displays. The new flexible displays are made up of 4 components: Polarizer, Encap, Organic Layer and TFT film.
As of now, the Korean manufacturer hopes to launch devices flaunting these flexible display by the end of 2012, but if that doesn’t happen we might see a whole range of flexible phones and tabs in 2013.
