Google has updated its Maps for Android app to v5.7 which has brought several new features to the mapping service — that includes Download Map Area, Scale Bar and Measure. All these new features can be accessed from Labs section which is located inside Google Maps’ menu.
With Download Map Area, finding nearby locations in a non-connected environment would become a lot more convenient. Let’s say you want to go to some XYZ place — you open up the app on your Android device to check out the area — now with Download Map Area you’d be able to download a map of 10 mile around your ‘XYZ place’ which would stored in your device for further use — neat, right? BTW, features like directions, Satellite views, Places, and 3D Buildings won’t work in the offline mode.
There are also a couple of other features like the Scroll Bar — it’s the scale that we’re all familiar using with web version of Google maps and the Measure feature — just select two places on the map by tapping over it and the app calculates distance between the two points.
