NPD told Joystiq that Mass Effect 3 sold about 1.3 million copies in United States in the first month of its release. This number is not completely accurate; NPD didn’t count Mass Effect 3 copies that were digitally downloaded via Origin, DLC, mobile and social games which EA confirms.

“We think the monthly NPD reports are a very poor indicator of the industry’s performance given the proportion of digital sales – including digital downloads via Origin, DLC, mobile and social games and much more – that are not captured in their reports,” said John Reseburg of EA’s corporate communications. “Taking these reports as an accurate snapshot of the industry today is a dangerous assumption.”

Mass Effect 3 was released for three platforms – PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. NPD didn’t reveal the breakdown of that 1.3 million but Microsoft executive Aaron Greenberg was quick enough to share Xbox’s domination in the Gaming world; according to Greenberg, Mass Effect 3 for Xbox 360 sold a whopping 943K copies; I would have said that Xbox leads PS3 4:1 but since NPD’s number doesn’t account the digital downloads, I wouldn’t make such a statement.
